The Kipushi zinc-copper-lead-germanium mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo has officially reopened after 31 years. A joint venture between Ivanhoe Mines and state-owned Gécamines, the high-grade mine is expected to produce 50,000–70,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate this year, with an average of 278,000 tonnes annually over five years. The reopening was celebrated as a boost for local communities and sustainable development. Ivanhoe’s stock rose following the announcement.
